INTRODUCTION:
Lycoris radiata (red spider lily) is a plant in the amaryllis family, Amaryllidaceae, subfamily Amaryllidoideae.Originally from China, it was introduced into Japan and from there to the United States and elsewhere. It flowers in the late summer or autumn, often in response to heavy rainfall. The common name hurricane lily refers to this characteristic, as do other common names, such as resurrection lily; these may be used for the genus as a whole.

Biological Effects:
Galanthamine extract is specific, competitive and reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It is also an allosteric modulator at nicotinic cholinergic receptor sites potentiating cholinergic nicotinic neurotransmission. Both the acetylcholine and nicotine receptors have been suggested as areas related to cognitive impairment. Initially, Galanthamine extract was used in anesthesiology to antagonize the effects of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants, and since then it was rapidly introduced in other areas of medicine, i.e. neurology, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, intensive care and resuscitation, cardiology, physiotherapy.
Galanthamine extract is a product with broad therapeutic index, allowing "soft" manifestation of its effect with individual dosing depending on the particular case.
Clinical use :
1) Indications :
Galantamine is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate vascular dementia and Alzheimer's.
2) Available forms :
The product is supplied in twice-a-day tablets, in once-a-day extended-release capsules, and in oral solution. The tablets come in 4 mg, 8 mg, and 12 mg forms. The capsules come in 8 mg, 16 mg, and 24 mg forms.
3) Adverse events :
In clinical trials, galantamine's side effect profile was very similar to that of other cholinesterase inhibitors, with gastrointestinal symptoms being the most notable and most commonly observed. In practice, some other cholinesterase inhibitors might be better tolerated; however, a careful and gradual titration over more than three months may lead to equivalent long-term tolerability.
