Enantiomers: ALA exists as two mirror-image molecules, called enantiomers:

*R(+)-ALA (or R-LA): The "right-handed" form. This is the biologically active form naturally synthesized by plants, animals, and humans. It is the form that binds to enzymes and is recognized by the body's receptors.
*S(-)-ALA (or S-LA): The "left-handed" form. This is a synthetic byproduct not found in significant amounts in nature. The human body has a limited ability to utilize it.
Sodium Salt Form: Bonding the R(+)-ALA molecule to a sodium ion dramatically increases its solubility in water. This is a critical advancement because pure R(+)-ALA, like the standard racemic ALA, has poor solubility and stability.
